Desktop icons can sometimes change or display incorrectly for a number of reasons, including software updates, new program installations, or a corrupted Windows icon cache. The good news is that this is almost always a cosmetic issue and does not affect the game itself. Below are a couple of solutions to help get your icon displaying correctly again.
Solution 1: Manually Point the Shortcut to the Correct File
This solution tells your desktop shortcut exactly where to find the correct icon for your game.
- Step 1 — Right-click the affected game icon on your desktop and select
Properties.
- Step 2 — In the Properties window, click the
Shortcuttab, then click theChange Iconbutton.
- Step 3 — If the game icon is in the icon box as shown below, select the icon, then click
OKto return to theProperties.
- Step 4 — Click
Apply, thenOK, and your icon should now be back to normal.
NOTE: If a warning appears saying "The file specified contains no icons," or there is no icon in the box, click OK to continue, then proceed to the next step.
- Step 5 — If there was no icon, or the file path in step 3 did not point to the .exe file similar to the file path below, click the
Browsebutton, and navigate to the following location:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Jewel Match Solitaire X Collector's Edition\Jewel Match Solitaire X.exe
- After locating the file, return to
Step 3, where you should now be able to choose the correct icon. - If there is no icon located at the correct path, please move on to the next solution.
Solution 2: Clear the Windows Icon Cache
Windows stores copies of icons in a temporary file called the icon cache. If this file becomes corrupted, icons may display incorrectly even after completing Solution 1. Clearing the icon cache forces Windows to rebuild it fresh, which should resolve any remaining display issues.
Please note: Clearing the icon cache is safe and will not affect your games, files, or any other data on your computer. Windows will automatically rebuild the cache after your computer restarts.
- Step 1 — Close all open programs and windows before proceeding.
- Step 2 — Right-click the
Startbutton and selectRun.
- Step 3 — In the Run window, type the following and click
OK:%localappdata%
- Step 4 — In the folder that opens, locate the file named
IconCache.db.
Please note: This file may be hidden. If you do not see it, please do the following:
- Click the
Viewtab at the top of the window. - Check the box labeled
Hidden Items. - The
IconCache.dbfile should now be visible.
- Step 5 — Right-click
IconCache.dband selectDelete.
- Step 6 — Restart your computer.
Once your computer has restarted, Windows will automatically rebuild the icon cache, and your game icons should now be displaying correctly.
